The rules
No town ban or permit for metal detecting (the Kure Beach code has no detector provision). Digging (Sec. 13.14.020): holes no wider than 5 feet or deeper than 16 inches, attended by a responsible adult, and the sand restored before leaving and no later than 30 minutes before sunset; civil penalty per the town fee schedule. Anyone on a dune outside a public access or approved walkover who tramples the dune vegetation faces a civil penalty; beach equipment must stay 15 feet from dune vegetation and marked nests. Fort Fisher State Recreation Area, just south, is a separate, prohibited area.
