The rules
No town ban or permit for metal detecting (the Surf City code has no detector provision). Digging: holes deeper than 12 inches need a responsible person attending, and must be filled level before you leave (Sec. 4-2; civil penalty per Sec. 1-6). Dunes: cross only at an authorized marked crossover or beach access; no damaging dunes or dune vegetation (Sec. 4-10(f)).
