Town visitor FAQ expressly allows metal detectors on the public beach. Small holes permitted but may not be left unattended at night or for more than one hour during the day; holes must not endanger people or animals or disrupt vehicle passage. Cape Hatteras National Seashore south of town is federally governed and prohibits detecting.
