The rules
No town ban or permit for metal detecting. Digging: holes no deeper than 12 inches; shovels other than toy shovels prohibited on the beach strand; holes attended at all times and filled before leaving or by 6:00 p.m. (Sec. 14-142). Dunes: no walking on dunes except at designated accesses; no damaging dune vegetation (Sec. 14-132). Penalties: $50 first offense, $100 second (Sec. 14-144). NC law: archaeological resources on state lands need a permit (G.S. 70).
