The rules
No town ban or permit for metal detecting (the Atlantic Beach code has no detector provision). Digging: fill every hole before leaving; no hole deeper than 2 feet or wider than 3 feet, attended or not (Sec. 5-4.3; penalties per Sec. 1-6). Fort Macon State Park at the east end of the island is a separate, prohibited area.
