The rules
No town ban or permit for metal detecting (the North Topsail Beach code has no detector provision). Digging: holes deeper than 12 inches need a responsible person attending, and must be filled level before leaving and 30 minutes before sunset (Sec. 10-23). Dunes: no walking, standing, sitting or placing gear on any dune except at a marked crossover (Sec. 10-49). Shipwrecks and underwater archaeological remains in place over ten years may not be removed without state approval (Sec. 12-51(d), G.S. 121-23).
