Neither Venice nor Sarasota County code mentions metal detectors, but both ban digging or removing sand, soil, fossils or artifacts (Venice Sec. 46-62(12); Sarasota County Sec. 90-33(16)) — the county exempts sand sculpting and picking up shells and shark teeth. Call before digging.
