The rules
A lifetime Orange County Parks and Recreation Metal Detector Use Permit (Guideline 2.15) is required, and it's valid only at approved county park sites. You must report every find to park staff, and staff may keep historical artifacts or items reported lost or stolen. Detecting is banned in wetlands, sensitive or archaeological areas, construction zones and within 1,000 feet of neighboring homes or businesses. Holes can be no deeper than six inches and must be refilled right away.
